10SPCT2013DestinationGuidewelcomeWelcometoSanPatricioCountyOneofthemostdiverseandhistoricalcommunitiesintheUnitedStatesalsohappenstobestrategicallylocatednearthegeographiccenterofNorthAmericainSouthTexasontheGulfofMexicocoastline.ForalmosttwocenturiesSanPatricioCountyhasthrivedbasedonitscrossroadslocationbetweenMexicoandthecentralandeasternUnitedStatesandbetweenNorthAmericaandtherestoftheworldviathePortofCorpusChristithefthbusiestintheUnitedStates.eongoingexpansionofthePanamaCanalmeanslargerhigher-volumemaritimetracbetweentheeasternU.S.theGulfCoastandEastAsianportslikeTianjinChinatheworldsfourthbusiestwithwhichthePorthasrecentlyenteredatradeagreement.SanPatricioCountyswarmsubtropicalclimateoersoneofthefriendliestenvironmentsinTexasforboatingshingkayakingcampingandalltherecreationalcoastalactivitiesthatourvisitorsloveandforwhichtheyreturnyearafteryear.WithinTexasthecountryssecondlargeststatebothgeographicallytoAlaskaandinpopulationtoCaliforniaSanPatricioCountyispartoftheCorpusChristiMetropolitanAreahometoabout420000permanentresidentsandtensofthousandsmoreseasonalresidentsandvisitors.ecountyisroughlyequidistanttoMcAllenandLaredoontheMexicanborderaswellastoSanAntonioandAustinthetoptwofastestgrowingeconomiesintheUnitedStates.EnergyandhealthcarepowerhouseHoustonisjustthreehoursupthecoastandisheadquartersforseveralmajorindustrialemployersinthecounty.WithinanhourofanyspotinSanPatricioCountyarebeautifulgulfbeachesalargefreshwaterlakebaysandestuariesthatoerworldclassgameshingsomeofthebesthuntinggroundsinTexastwocommunitycollegesandtwouniversitiesandinCorpusChristimodernmedicalcentersalargenewlyexpandedshoppingmallattractionsandmuseumsaAAprofessionalbaseballteamandeventandconcertvenues. SPCT2013DestinationGuide11FromLandGranttoCrossroadsofCommerceABriefHistoryofSanPatricioCountyArtifactssuggestthattheSanPatricioCountyareahasbeeninhab-itedbyhumansforatleast6000yearsandperhapsmuchlonger.eKarankawaIndiansprobablymovedintotheareaabout1400A.D.andhundredsofIndiancampsiteshavebeenidentiedinthecounty.AnumberofSpanishandFrenchexplorersincludingAlonsolvarezdePinedaAlonsoDeLenJeanBrangerDiegoOrtizParrillaandJosdeEviatraveledthroughwhatisnowSanPatricioCounty.eseexpeditionsmappedtheCoastalBendssystemofbaysandestuariesitsriversandbarrierislands.eUnitedStateseconomyfrom1819to1836wasoneofgreatuncertaintyandtumultandincludedtwopanicsandtwofull-blowndepressions.DuringthisperiodwhilethousandsofAmericansventuredwestwardinpursuitofabetterlifeotherstookadvantageofsettlementopportunitiesoeredbyanewly-independentMexicowhichextendedtheSpanishcolonizationpolicyforitsstateofCoahuilayTejaswhereempresariosweregrantedlandinexchangeforrecruitingandtakingre-sponsibilityforsettlersandforprotectingagainstIndianattacksSte-phenF.AustinbeingthersthavingestablishedAustinsColonybetweentheBrazosandColoradoRivers.UnderMexicanlawcolonialistswererequiredtolearnandspeakSpanishpracticeCatholicismandmenwererequiredtoengageinfarmingoraskilledtrade.In1828JohnMcMullenandJamesMcGloincontractedwiththegovernmentofMexicotosettletwohundredIrishCatholicfamiliesoneightyleaguesapx.360000acresoflandnorthoftheNuecesRivertherstofwhichcamefromtheNewYorkIrishcommunityinlate1829.IncludedintwoadditionalgroupstofollowwerefamiliesfromIrelandwhowereamongtherstEuropeanstosettleinTexas.etownofSanPatriciodeHiberniawasestablishedandnamedinhonorofthepa-tronsaintofIrelandSaintPatrickandin1834theMunicipalityofSanPatriciowaslegallyestablishedintheMexicanstateofCoahuilayTejas.PeaceundertheauthorityofMexicowouldnotlastlonghoweverwhentheTexasRevolutionbrokeoutinOctober1835withtheBattleofGo-liad.esecondactionoftherevolutionwasthecaptureofFortLipan-titlnonthewesternbankoftheNuecesRiversouthofMathisbycolo-nistsfromSanPatricioandinFebruary1836abattleensuedbetweenMexicanforcesandadetachmentofTexiansledbyFrancisW.Johnsoninwhichallbutfouroftherebelswerekilledorcaptured.AsaresultmostofthecolonistsrelocatedtoVictoriaandforthemostpartdidnotreturnalthoughSanPatricioCountywasestablishedasoneoftheoriginalcountiesoftheRepublicofTexasbytheindependentnationsrstcongress.eaftermathoftheTexasWarforIndependencekeptmostoftheoriginalsettlersawayincursionsfromtheMexi-canarmytookplacefornearlyadecadeafterthewarincludingaraidonSanPatriciobyGen.Ra-faelVasquezaslateas1842.Dur-ingthisperiodthecountywasclassiedasdepopulatedandforoneyear1845-1846thecountyseatofgovernmentwasCorpusChristithatwasuntiltheter-ritorysouthoftheNuecesRiverbecameNuecesCountyandtheseatwasmovedtoSanPatricio.AnnexationdiscussionswiththeUnitedStatesbeganalmostimmediatelyafterTexaswonindepen-denceandstabilizationtothesouthernregionwouldcomeonlybrieywhenGen.ZacharyTaylorestablishedanarmyencampmentnearpres-ent-dayRockportattheendof1845amovethatcoincidedwithTexasbecomingthe28thstateinDecemberofthatyear.PeaceinSanPatricioagainwouldnotlastastheannexationsparkedtheMexican-AmericanWarin1846thenalresultofwhichwastheestablishmentoftheRioGrandeRiverastheU.S.MexicanborderalongwithU.S.territorialpossessionofCaliforniaandNewMexico.Todayhometosome65000residentsthecountywasfoundedduringtimesofconictandturmoilandgrewwhenagricultureandoilindustriesboomed.BelowSintonBankofCommercecirca1910TexasGeneologyHistoryProjectWillBeachampCollectionLeftHistoricMapofSpanishExpansioninTexashistory 12SPCT2013DestinationGuideeUnitedStatesCensusof1850reported200perma-nentresidentsincludingthreeslaveslivinginSanPatricioCountyandac-cordingtotheagricul-turalcensusfarmlandstotaled40465acresmostforraisingcattle.Inadditionto200humanresidentsthecountywashometo500milkcows1200cattleand150sheep.Cropcultivationhadnotyetbeenestab-lishedandonly4400bushelsofcornthecountysmostimpor-tantcropatthetimewereproducedthatyear.WiththepeacethatfollowedtwowarscameanewgenerationofsettlersincludingJohnG.Hatchin1854onwhoseCrossSRanchtheEnglesidePostOcewasestablished.YoungsColemanwhowouldbecomeoneofthere-gionsmostsuccessfulranchersandbusinessmenestablishedaranchonChiltipinCreekeastofpresent-daySintonEddieandFrankWhitesettledWhitePointinthesouthernareaofthecountyonNuecesBayin1856andWilliamMarshallMeanswhoservedascountysherifrom1862to1865establishedthetownofMeansvillethreemilessouthofpresent-dayOdem.MeansvillesheydaywouldcometoacrashingendonJanuary301876whenMeansrabble-rousingsonsshotupagen-eralstoreintheBeeCountytownofPapalote.AposseledbySher-iEdGarnerchasedtheMeansboystotheirfathersranchwhereaconfrontationensuedthatendedwithWilliamsMeansdeath.HissonsvowedrevengeandkilledSheriGarnerinchurchinfrontofhisfamilyandcommunityinAugustofthatyearby1879theTexasRangerspersuadedtheMeansclantoclearoutofthecountyforgoodwhichtheydidin23coveredwagons.AcemeteryisallthatremainsofMeansvilletoday.Cattleranchinginthe1850sremainedSanPatricioCountysmainsourceofincomewhilecropcultivationspreadslowlyinthesoutheast-ernsection.In1858thecountyscurrentboundarieswereestablishedandinthe1860censusthepopulationhadgrownto620including95slaves.Farmsandranchesofmorethanthreeacreshadgrownto51andwerehometosome48000cattleandalmost4000sheepproducingoverthreetonsofwoolbutonly475bushelsofcornwereproducedalongwithmodestcropsofsweetpotatoespotatoesbeansandpeas.AlthoughthecountywasnotonthemainbattlelinesoftheCivilWaritwasontheCottonRoadtoMatamorosMexicoamajorsmugglingrouteusedtoavoidthefederalblockadeontheSouth.AConfederatefortwasbuiltatAransasPasstocombatUnionshipsonpa-trolintheGulfofMexicowhichwouldperiodicallybringraidingpar-tiestotheshoresofCorpusChristiBayburninghousesandconscatinglivestock.eraidsandthethreatofagreatermilitaryconictresultedintheexodusofmanyInglesideresidentstoGoliadduringthewar.AftertheCivilWarthecountysawaninuxofSouthernerslookingforabundantcheaplandonwhichtosettleespeciallyinthesouthernpartofthecounty.Around1870SidneyG.BordenformedthetownofSharpsburgonthebanksoftheNuecesRivernearwhereIH-37andUS-77crosstherivertoday.BordenoperatedaferryserviceandbeforelongSharpsburghadmoreresidentsthanSanPatricio.By1870over21000bushelsofcornwereproducedinthecountybutcattlewasstilltheprimaryindustry.In1871omasM.ColemansonofYoungsCole-manalongwithGeorgeW.FultonandJ.M.andT.M.MathisformedtheColemanMathisFultonPartnershipthelargestcattlerminthestateofTexaswithherdsinthreecoun-ties.An18-monthdroughtin1878-79wipedoutmuchofitsstockandthermdissolvedT.H.Mathistookhis64000-acreshareofthecompanyslandandestablishedwhatisnowMathisTex-asinthenorthwestcornerofthecounty.eremainingpartnersformedtheColeman-FultonPastureCompanyin1880withitsranchheadquarterslocatedatRinconnorthofpresent-dayGregoryinayearinwhichtherewerefewerthan7000headofcattleinthecountyfollowingthedevastatingdrought.eeconomyofSanPatricioCountytookamajorturnupwardin1885withtheconstructionoftheSanAntonioAransasPassRailwaytomovecattlecottonandothergoodstoandfromthenewlydevelopedAransasHarborandmarketstothenorthandwest.By1890thetownsofMathisSintonandGregoryhadbeenestablishedalongtherailroadwithnewdevelopmentspurredalongbyoutofstateinvestorslikeDavidB.SintontheOhiopigironmogulwhowasoneofthewealthiestmeninAmericaandaclosefriendofFultons.Sintonandhisson-in-lawCharlesP.TaftinvestedintheColeman-FultonPastureCompanywhoseranchheadquartersatRinconsoonbecameknownastheTaftRanch.TaftwasthebrotherofPresidentWilliamHowardTaftandearnedhisfortuneinthenewspaperbusinesshavingworkedaseditoroftheCin-cinnatiTimes-Star.HeservedoneterminCongressandamonghisotherinvest-mentswasthebriefowner-shipoftheChicagoCubs.In1893theSin-tonTownCompanywasformedtodevelop640acresforatownsitenearthecen-terofthecountyandSintonwasnamedthenewcountyseatofgovernmentlaterthatyear.BytheturnofthecenturytheagriculturalhistoryIn1860SanPatricioCountyshumanpopulationwas620plus48000headofcattleand4000sheepproducingthreetonsofwool.eGreatDroughtof1878-79reducecattlestocktofewerthan7000head.SaintPatrickthepatronsaintofIrelandwasthechosennamesakeofthecountysfoundingsettlementSanPatriciodeHibernia. SPCT2013DestinationGuide13historyeconomyhadrecoveredandthecountywashometo1312permanentresidentsand190farmsandrancheswith34000headofcattle2000acresofplantedcornand2100acresofcotton.WiththeinuxofmillionsofEuropeanimmigrantstoAmericacameanexplosioninthecountrysagriculturalneeds.In1909landagentsinthecountybegantospreadthewordacrosstheUnitedStatesthatamplelandwasavailableinSanPatricioCountyalongwithrail-roadsandportstomovetheirgoodstomarket.BeforelonghundredsofnewfarmersandtheirfamiliesweremovingintothecountyalongwithtrainloadsoflaborersfromMexicohiredtoclearmesquitefromlandstobefarmed.ManyoftheseMexicanim-migrantsstayedintheareatostartnewlivesandtakeadvantageoftheopportu-nitytoworkaddingtotheculturaldiversityofthecounty.NewtownssuchasOdemSt.PaulEdroyandSodvillesprangupalongtherailroadduringthisperiodandby1920therewere11386permanentresidentsand757operatingfarmsinSanPatricioCounty.Mostsignicantlynotonlyhadfarmingovertakenranchingastheleadingareaofagriculturebutcottonhadbecomethecountysmostimportantcropwith60000acresplantedin1920and155000acresby1930.SanPatricioCountysnewcoreindustryoilandgasemergedinthe1920sincludingthecon-structionofagaspipelinebetweeneldsinRefu-gioCountyandAransasHarbor.Itwasin1935howeverthattheoilbusinesscametothecountyinahugewaywhenthePlymouthOilCompanyhititbigontheWelderRanchfollowedbyamajordiscoveryintheEastWhitePointFieldsouthofTaft.Todaymanyoftheseeldshavereturnedtoagriculturaluseandsometodual-usewiththeconstructionofenergy-producingwindturbines.TodaySanPatricioCountythriveswithacombinedeconomyofenergychemicalandmaritimeindustriesagriculturemariculturetour-ismandsoonasamajorcenterofindustrialmanufacturing.JosefaChipitaRodriguezwasaMexican-Americanwomanwhowouldhostandfeedtravelersthroughthecountyontheporchofherlean-tocabinlocatedinthebanksoftheAransasRiver.CottonRoadtravelerJohnSavagewasfoundmurderedwithanaxandstuedintoaburlapsackpresumablyforthe600ingoldhewascarryingandChipitawasaccusedalongwithJuanSilverawhommanybelievedwasherillegitimateson.WhenSavagesgoldwaslaterfoundintheAransasRivernorthofSanPatriciothejuryatChipitastrialrecommendedmercybutJudgeBenjaminFranklinNealthesameB.F.NealwhopersonallynancedanartillerycompanytodefendCorpusChristifromUnioninvadersorderedhertobeexecutedbyhanging.SheriWilliamMeansheldChipitainhishomeinMeansvilleandthwartedtwolynchmobswhoshoweduptocarryoutthesentence.UltimatelyhoweverChipitawashangedonFridayNovember131863afterbeingheldinlegironsandchainedtoawallinthecountycourthousewherechildrenwouldbringhercandyandcornhusksforcigarettesthelegendisthatshemayhavebeengivingcovertotherealkillerhersonJuan.Chipitaissaidtohavemoanedafterbeingplacedinhercon.ShewasburiedinanunmarkedgravebutoveracenturyoflorepersiststhatChipitasghoststillroamsthebanksoftheAransasRiverpicturedwithanoosearoundherneckwailingfromtheriverbottom.TheHangingofChipitaRodriguezonlythesecondwomanlegallyhangedinTexashasbeenthesubjectofnumerousbooksandmagazinearticlesaswellasascreenplayandtwooperasoneofwhichwasperformedbytheUniversityofTexasmusicdepartment.OnJune131985Gov.MarkWhitesignedaproclamationsponsoredbyStateSen.CarlosTruanandpassedbytheTexasLegislaturethatabsolvedChipitaofthemurder.GhostoftheWailingWomanHangedformurderChipitasaidtohauntriverbanksSintonRailroadStationTexasGeneologyHistoryProjectWillBeachampCollection
